Description

What is a ball screw guide?

A ball screw guide is a linear profile guide in which a carriage moves silently along a rail using balls. This movement is extremely precise and free of play. Compared to traditional sliding guides, friction is 50 times lower. Because there is a forced guidance of the carriage on the rail in a profile rail guide, this construction can withstand forces from multiple directions, making it suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications. This guide can even be used upside down.

BRASOM ball screw guide

We supply each rail with one carriage as a standard. This carriage is already slid onto the rail. Never slide a carriage off a rail without care. The balls may fall out and putting them back in can be more challenging than it sounds. If it’s really necessary to remove the carriage, you can place a second rail lengthwise against the rail with the carriage and slide the carriage from one rail to the other. You can also use a plastic accessory. Each separately orderable carriage comes with this. You can slide a carriage from rail to accessory and vice versa. Unfortunately, we cannot supply the accessories separately.

Attention! We only accept returns with unopened airtight packaging. The components are greased, which makes them prone to quick soiling and can’t be resold as new. Another reason is that the condition (missing balls) is difficult for us to verify.

Our ball screw guides are equipped with four rows of balls, positioned relative to the rail in such a way that the combination can withstand forces and moments from all sides. The magnitudes of these forces and moments are schematically shown in the last image. We differentiated between one carriage and two carriages placed next to each other on the rail. Furthermore, all relevant dimensions are marked.

Our carriages are equipped with a flange, which gives them long threaded holes and a large contact area. Additionally, each carriage is fitted with seals that slide over the rail in front of the carriage, preventing internal contamination. Each carriage also has a grease nipple. The carriages are delivered greased and usually require little to no maintenance. Ensure that the seals are not damaged. So, do not use them as the end stop of a movement.

Mounting

Mounting a ball screw guide

The installation of these rails and carriages must be done very carefully and with high precision. If a rail has even a slight bend, such as from clamping it against a curved surface, the carriages won't work properly or will become stiff. This can lead to faster wear and tear and the inability to withstand the prescribed forces and moments.

If you choose to use two rails side by side, the alignment becomes even more critical. For an optimally functioning system, the spacing between the two rails, along the entire length and in all directions, should not deviate by more than 0.01mm. Twisting with respect to each other is also not acceptable.

The best practice is therefore to place the rail(s) on a single-piece milled surface. Make sure that the surface is perfectly straight. Use slotted holes to prevent lateral tension. If you're using two rails, it's recommended not to securely bolt the carriage(s) on the least loaded rail. Let the weight rest only on that carriage(s).

Good luck!
